Rachael was born and raised in Aurora, Oregon at a school surrounded by 70 acres of farmland and mentors that encouraged her to explore the natural world and her curiosity. With a BS in BioResource Research and a BA. in International Studies from OSU, she studied salmon in the Columbia Basin, manatees in Puerto Rico, whales in Mexico, dolphins in Scotland, as well as barnacles and seaweeds in New Zealand. Fascinated by the intersection between people, wildlife and decision-making she moved to England for a MS in Holistic Science at Schumacher College and went on to coordinate a volunteer water quality monitoring program and the Oregon Beach Cleanups. As an antidote to the catastrophic predictions of environmental science she delved into wilderness survival and spent 4 summers teaching youth ancestral skills at kid’s camps. Along the way she picked up a passion for wildlife tracking, and dreamed up the Wolf OR-7 Expedition where in 2014, by foot and bicycle she retraced the dispersal route of a GPS-collared wolf from NE Oregon into California for a documentary film. When curiosity beckons, she believes it’s worth the adventure to pay attention. If she had one superpower she would choose to multiply herself so she could take every class in the world. Until then, she is excited to learn from Saturday Academy’s amazing instructors and kids as our Classes & Camps Director.
