The class catalog search engine is set up to help you find the right class for you. You can filter searches by grade, date, time, discipline, location and/or cost. In addition, you can search for an exact class title or a keyword within a title or description. Here's how!
Search Tips
Select from the following:
Our online filter provides you with the option to focus your search. Just click the FILTER button, select the items you would like to filter your search by and click APPLY. You can filter by:
Grade: Choose a range or a specific grade. Summer classes are for students entering their grade in the fall.
Discipline: Choose one or more of our primary disciplines. Note that is it better to filter by discipline in this way than to try and filter by discipline in the search field as a keyword. Disciplines to filter by include:
- Arts: Performing & Visual
- Camping & Outdoors
- College Prep & Study Skills
- Computer Science & Technology
- Engineering & Robotics
- Humanities
- Math
- Medical Science
- Science
- Writing
Location: Choose one or more of the locations you are interested in.
Date: Choose a start date, end date or both.
Time: Choose All day, AM, PM, Weekday, Weekend or Week-long.
Cost: Enter the range for the class or camp. Note that financial aid is available for all camps and classes. If the class you are interested in does not fit your budget, apply for aid.
Note that you can add as many filters as you would like. If you are not finding what you need in your search and would like to set it up again, make sure that you click on clear to remove all of your search options and start over.
Enter the exact class title from our print catalog in the search field surrounded by quotes. For example: "Java Programming & Gaming" or "PDX Preparedness Challenge"
Note that we always use "&" rather than "and" in titles. So, if you enter "Java Programming and Gaming," you will not get results. If you want to search this way, be careful to make sure that you are entering the title exactly as it appears in the catalog.
If you do not include quotation marks in your search, your list will include any classes or camps that we offer that contain the words that you entered anywhere in the description. For example, if you are interested in finding a math class and you enter the word math into the search field, your results will include not only math classes. It will include art, computer science and science classes that have math requirements or used the word math in the description. If you enter the words Java Programming & Gaming, you will get more results that you have the time to sift through as the words Java, programming, gaming and the sign "&" appear in many of our classes and camps.
We realize this is not ideal and are working on improving our search engine on the new website. Hopefully this tip helps you in the meantime!
Use the keyword search to further focus your search results. Do not use this function as your primary search option. For example, if you are interested in finding a science class, use the FILTER function to filter by discipline. Then, if you specifically want a biology class, enter the word "biology" in the search field. Your results will include only science classes that have a biology component.
We have a few known problems with our new search engine. We are working to get them corrected. In the meantime, if you run in to any of these issues. here are solutions:
- I entered a DISCIPLINE and now I'd like to add another one, but I don't see the link to DISCIPLINE under ADD FILTER.
- Click CLEAR, then click ADD FILTER. You will see the DISCIPLINES option. Then choose all of the disciplines you are interested in browsing before you click APPLY.
- I entered Math in the search box as a keyword to find math classes, but I am getting more than 6 pages of results and they include computer programming classes and college prep classes as well as math classes.
- Click CLEAR, then click ADD FILTER. Choose DISCIPLINES and then apply the MATH filter. Only classes with math as a primary discipline will show up.
- I am looking for a Programming in C class, so I entered it in the SEARCH box. The results were not just Programming in C classes.
- Add quotation marks around your course title (eg. "Programming in C") and you will only get classes with those words in the title. These results will include any course title with "Programming" and "C" included. If you are looking for a specific Programming in C class (eg. Programming in C: Level I), enter the full title and you will get only results for that class.
- I have entered information in the SEARCH, but now I would like to do a new search, but I don't see the CLEAR option.
- Delete your search parameters and then press SEARCH again. All of your filters will refresh and you will be able to create a new search.
