Produce “designer” proteins as you manipulate the genetic material of bacteria and jellyfish. “Shine a light” on molecular biology – literally! Use transformation to introduce a bioluminescent gene from jellyfish into bacteria, causing it to glow fluorescent green under UV light. Extract the protein using centrifugation and purify it using chromatography. The engineering tools used in this class are similar to those applied in new health treatments, agricultural applications and environmental solutions.
