“Would you like to scoop out some crawfish?” Probably not what you would expect to hear during a volunteer activity, but then again, here at Saturday Academy we pride ourselves on being hands-on and in-depth! This spring we partnered with PIVOT JobCorps to host a Spring Garage Clean Out Day where we managed science supplies, organized class kits and yes, even scooped biological materials out of tubs. We have buckets of specimen for an array of classes and camps we offer. Maybe marine biology is your thing-you might find starfish and sharks in our garage. Medicine and surgery interest you? Welp, you’ll find pig ears and cow eyeballs to practice your dissection and sutures. Needless to say, there is never a dull moment in our supply garage.
Three amazing young students came out on a cool day in March, rolled up their sleeves and lent a hand to ensure our garage and supplies were ready for the crazy summer rush. Saturday Academy was in our big push before we launched over 22 camps and 300 classes for the summer months. We owe a big thank you to these students for helping us make the process of getting class supplies ready to go for instructors.
PIVOT Jobcorps are truly helping students reach their potential to succeed in today’s workforce and we are happy to have them as a partner. Not only did we get to spend an afternoon with bright young students, working alongside them, but we worked together to accomplish what seemed to be a daunting task. Saturday Academy is grateful for the privilege to partner with amazing organizations and are always looking to create more meaningful relationships with the community.
