Katie wanted to be a doctor right up through her freshman year at Vassar College, when a sociology class made her want to help people in a whole different way. She transferred to Earlham College and majored in Peace Studies with an emphasis in education, spending a semester abroad studying and working at an integrated school in Northern Ireland (integrated being Protestants and Catholics in Belfast). After earning her Master’s Degree in Education at the University of Maryland, Katie moved to San Francisco and taught elementary school for 7 years before becoming a technology teacher and developing a national award-winning technology education program at her school. Upon moving to Portland in 2002, Katie worked in the Beaverton School District for 9 years as a technology coordinator, as well as an elementary library media specialist and tech teacher, before leaving education to pursue work in the non-profit world. When Katie is not helping kids follow their curiosity by connecting them with classes, she is usually playing with her rescue lab mutt, Rex, or cooking, reading a good book, birdwatching or monkeying around with photographs.
